Safety Inspections
The one system that is of greatest concern to home buyers and home owners is the electrical system. Very few home inspectors are qualified to make a complete detailed assessment of an electrical system.
At Gillis Electric, we are a licensed master electrician. Our basic home inspection already includes an inspection of the electrical system that exceeds industry standards for home inspections.
The inspection includes the removal and inspection of a select number
of wiring devices (outlets, switches, etc.) to:
- Check the condition of the device and the wire feeding the device.
- Check for open grounds.
- Check for proper polarity.
- Check the integrity of the connections.
- Check to see whether it is properly wired (i.e. proper wiring methods and workmanship).
A representative number of devices will be checked. Typically, we check 10-15% of the devices but if we find problems in some of the devices, we increase the number of devices that we check, so that we can better assess the likelihood that the problems exist in other areas.
- Inspecting the main panel and sub panels for proper grounding, bonding, and integrity of connections.
- Checking the integrity of the water meter bonding jumper if it is present.
- Checking for the presence of a driven ground rod and the integrity of the connection.
- Checking for proper grounding of supplemental systems such as telephone and cable television and the integrity of the connections.
- Checking critical areas for potential corrosion problems that may result from improper connections or the use of dissimilar metals.
- Testing the operation of all Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters.
Surge Protection
Surges are sudden and unexpected spikes in voltage that travel throughout your home or office electrical systems. Some surges come from within your own home or office, such as turning on a vacuum cleaner or sending a document to your printer. Other surges come from outside your home, as in electric utility switching, downed power poles, cut power lines, and lightning strikes. Surge can even enter through cable televisions and telephone wiring.
As the weather begins to warm up and get hot, Florida homeowners will begin to use more electricity, which may cause a surge. These surges can literally destroy expensive electronics! You need a whole house surge protection system in order to combat these surges.
The inexpensive power strip-type protectors provide little or no protection. You can get 30% more life out of your appliances and electronics if you use our Whole House Surge Protection. Throughout our many years of experience we have learned that by taking certain preventative measures such as correcting a minor electrical problem, costly repairs and replacement of parts can often be avoided.
Surge Protection is vital to the health of your electronic equipment. Gillis Electric, Inc. offers a full line of surge protectors to fit your individual needs and budget.
Circuit Panel Repair or Replacement
When you need an electrical service panel upgrade to accommodate more branch circuits or replace an outdated electrical service, look no further. Gillis Electric can help. If you are concerned about the possible fire and safety hazard of an aging electric service panel in your Florida home, we are here for you.
Panel Change Out
A panel change out is usually required to alleviate a problem with the existing panel. Sometimes a breaker(s) might overheat to the point that the buss bar in a panel gets burned. The conductors between the meter and panel may become loose and burn out the main lugs, especially common when aluminum conductors were used.
Gillis Electric is the leading installer of new electrical panels in the Hernando County area. The reason you ask? Great prices, fast service, and because we do so many service panel upgrades, an intimate understanding of exactly what it takes to get the job done right the first time.
